Mid / Senior Copywriter

Ampersand is seeking to sharpen its creative edge with an experienced, conceptual copywriter. This individual will be considered a key player at Ampersand and will be a full-time, senior member of our core creative team. We are looking for someone with a proven record of developing concepts and bringing them to life, and the ability to communicate big ideas to our clients in cohesive and diverse ways across multiple platforms. We are a full-service, purpose-based branding agency, so our writer will have the opportunity to shepherd the brands he/she works on through fully integrated campaigns. Because we are a small but mighty team, we need a writer with the ability to make a diverse set of brands come alive—each with its own tone and personality. For this reason, this position requires a person with a proven ability and history of writing for multiple big brands, has a fluid style and can pivot from one account to the next seamlessly, and who preferably has spent some time in an agency environment. It is also important to note this is an attitude-free zone, so collaboration, respect, and generally being a good human are table stakes qualities; this person should be a great culture fit, not a diva.

 

Our new writer will be asked (at times) to work both individually and collectively – as part of a creative team. He or she will be expected to learn the “Ampersand way,” which means participating in a strategic process that helps frame ideas for creative development. But...we also want you to bring your original insights and point-of-view to the table, and be comfortable

Essential Functions

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Work with in-house creative partners (Art Directors, Designers) and, on occasion, with freelance talent to concept and execute a range of traditional, non-traditional and digital ideas.

  • Report to a Creative Director and assist with day-to-day client copy needs, bigger, longer-term projects like brand campaigns and pitches, and occasionally be asked to help with strategic language and in- house, self-promotional copy.

  • Become familiar with clients so that consistent and appropriate brand tone of voice is created and maintained.

  • Ability to pivot on multiple, diverse accounts at the drop of a hat -- we need a chameleon who can effortlessly write in varied styles depending on the unique brand voice.

  • Conceptual writing for digital & social, radio, OOH, television, print advertising executions and various collateral materials for a variety of brands.

  • Follow strategic and creative direction, and work cooperatively with Account Service.

  • Ability to assist account team in developing compelling, persuasive and entertaining copy for secondary deliverables like agency RFP’s, new business proposals, social media content strategies, client promotions or contests and the agency’s own social media presence.

  • Be a team leader that brings personal and professional expertise into the writing element of advertising. Have a willingness to mentor junior writers.

  • Know how to communicate professionally and effectively with internal agency members as well as external professionals (clients, vendors, producers).

  • Work in a timely and dedicated manner to complete projects by deadline.

  • Be flexible with changes in assignment specifications and timelines.

Minimum Job Requirements

Education:

Related degree in Advertising and/or Journalism, or related field experiencepreferred.

Experience:

Five-plus years copywriting experience preferred with advertising or

marketing agency (Portfolio required; references required).

Specific Skills:

  • Must be a conceptual, brand writer that is capable of translating strategy into big ideas, but ability to write for social and promotional executions is also a part of the job, and is considered a big plus!

  • Ability to handle multiple projects/accounts at once and effectively meet deadlines.

  • Strong writing / concepting skills. (eg. Concept statements, why it works, why it satisfies consumer need states and human truths. Ability to identify cultural insights is also important. Detail-oriented.

  • Working knowledge of the advertising / marketing industry a must.

  • Multi-cultural advertising experience (specifically Spanish language advertising) and ability to concept/write in Spanish is a plus
